FEELING STRESSED?

—You’re not alone!

In a 1968 episode of the original Star Trek, the crew of the starship Enterprise encounters an intergalactic species whose lives are far faster paced than those of their human counterparts. But there is a price. "At this level, they are easily damaged," Captain Kirk observes, "as if accelerated living burns them out." Star Trek's creators apparently were making an observation about where the mounting pace of modern life was taking us--and they may have been even more right than they realized.

The World Health Organization recently predicted that by the year 2020, half of the top 10 medical problems worldwide will be stress related, and another recent study found that 54% of people worldwide now complain of stress at work.

Stress is a very real problem that affects all of us to varying degrees. Perhaps the most daunting aspect of stress is the way it is self-perpetuating. Just thinking about how to get out from under it puts us under more stress.

There is a way out, though--a sure and simple way of escape. It's so simple, in fact, that many people make the mistake of dismissing it before trying it and therefore continue on in their stressed-out state.

"Come to Me," Jesus says, "and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" (Matthew 11:28-30). Just a few quiet moments with Jesus can melt away the tension, bring peace of mind and spirit, and put the situations that lead to stress in proper perspective. Can it really be as simple as that? You'll never know what sweet relief awaits you till you try it!

PACKAGE PRAYER

—A spiritual exercise

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you” (Psalm 55:22).

Soft background music may help set the tone. Begin this exercise by closing your eyes, and breathe deeply and slowly for a minute. Now mentally articulate one by one the concerns and worries on your mind today, such as things you need to take care of, or situations at work or with your children, or health issues.

As you bring up in your mind each thing that you’re concerned about, imagine yourself packaging it up and placing it in Jesus’ hands. As you do, thank Jesus for how He’s going to deal with that problem in the way He knows is best.

Take as much time as you need to unload all of your cares in this specific, methodical way.

Discipline your mind to focus on each problem only as long as it takes to call it up in your mind and picture yourself handing it over to Jesus. Once it’s in His hands, don’t dwell on it any longer or let your thoughts wander to the details, but move on to the next problem.

When you have finished going through your list, thank and praise Him for His unfailing love, His unlimited power, His
concern for you, and His help in working out your problems.

CONSIDER THE SPARROW

—A message to you from Jesus

My eye is on the sparrow as she flutters about in search of food and a place to nest. I guide her to a resting place, and she trusts Me. She doesn't worry about what she doesn't have. She just goes about her day and trusts that I will provide her needs. How small and numerous are the sparrows, and yet I know and watch over them all. I remember and care for each one.

You, My child, are far more precious to Me than all the sparrows combined, and if I show such concern for these small and seemingly insignificant birds, will I not also care for you?

I know your troubles and I understand your fears. I am here to give you faith and answer your prayers, but I need you to trust Me as the little sparrow does. You don't see her fluttering about in a panic, worried and flurried; she is calm and peaceful, knowing that My eye is on her and I will care for her as My own.

My eye is on you, too, and I stand ready to help. So trust Me, won't you? Let Me do the worrying!

“Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?  Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.” (The Bible—Luke 12:6-7)

To you...

If you haven’t yet experienced the kind of happiness and joy you’ve read about on these pages, maybe it's because you haven't yet invited Jesus into your heart and life. You can do this by simply praying the following prayer:

"Dear Jesus, thank You for giving Your life for me. Please forgive me for the wrong things I’ve done, come into my heart, and give me Your gift of eternal life. Teach me more about Your love, and fill me with Your joy. Amen. §
